: Lawyer Referral Services
The section offers information and resources relating to Lawyer Referral Services. These services are designed to assist persons who are able to pay lawyer fees. Many state and local bar associations offer Lawyer Referral Service programs, some organized by specialty, as a public service. If you lack experience with the legal system, lack information about the type of service needed, or even a fear the potential costs of seeing a lawyer, you might consider the Lawyer Referral option. You can contact a Lawyer Referral Service for the name of a lawyer who specializes in the type of case you have. You should understand that referrals from referral services are not recommendations nor do these services guarantee a particular level of experience or expertise. Some bar associations charge participating lawyers and law firms a fee to be included on the referral list. Similarly, some referral services charge you an administrative fee to use the service. Typically, you are entitled to an initial, free consultation with a lawyer through the service. Importantly, some states strictly regulate Lawyer Referral Services. If you contact a Lawyer Referral Service that is not directly sponsored by a state or local bar association, you should ask whether it is recognized or approved by your state bar association. You might also consider contacting your state or local bar association and ask whether a particular referral service is registered or approved in your state.
